There is no single best month. There is a best month for your wedding. The difference matters more than most people realize.

It is not a coincidence that this season was chosen carefully. Anikó began planning weddings in Germany in 2008 and spent years understanding exactly what each month offers, what the light does to a baroque courtyard in September, what the vineyard hillsides of the Elbe valley look like when the harvest begins, why a July evening at Schloss Albrechtsberg feels different from a May morning at Villa Sorgenfrei. May: the opening of the season
May is when Germany comes alive. The castle gardens are in full bloom, the days are long and the temperatures are genuinely pleasant, typically 16–22°C. There are no crowds yet, hotel rates have not reached their summer peak and the vineyard slopes above the Elbe are lush and green.
For couples who want outdoor ceremonies without the intensity of high summer, May is consistently one of our strongest recommendations. The light is soft, the evenings are long and the sense that you have arrived at something beautiful before everyone else is part of what makes a May castle wedding feel so special.
June: the most popular month, for good reason
June is peak season and it earns that status. Long days, warm evenings, maximum daylight for photography, reliably good weather. A ceremony at Schloss Albrechtsberg in the golden light of a June evening is among the most photographed moments in MyCastleWedding's portfolio.
The practical consideration: June is when the best venues book out earliest. Couples who have their hearts set on a specific castle in June should begin planning 12–14 months in advance. Waiting until 6 months out significantly narrows the options.
July and August: summer in its fullest form
Warm, occasionally hot (25–32°C), festive and energetic. The Elbe River is at its most inviting private cruises through Dresden's baroque waterfront are at their most dramatic, the terraces of vineyard venues like Schloss Wackerbarth are full of life, and the long evenings create a natural rhythm for celebrations that run until the early hours.
The honest note: July and August also bring more tourists to Dresden's historic center. For couples who want the city's landmarks as a backdrop, the Fürstenzug mural, the Frauenkirche, the Semperoper, this is something to factor in, though it rarely affects the experience on the wedding day itself.
September: the month that surprises everyone
If Anikó were to name a personal favorite, September would be a strong contender. The summer crowds are gone, the light changes to something extraordinary warmer, more golden, more cinematic and the Saxon wine region begins its harvest season. The vineyard estates, Schloss Wackerbarth and Villa Sorgenfrei among them, take on a depth and richness that summer simply cannot offer.
September is increasingly popular with couples who have researched carefully. It is also increasingly booking out further in advance. Couples who plan a September wedding and combine it with a vineyard visit, a harvest dinner or a private wine tasting create a weekend experience that guests talk about for years.
Early October: the last window and a beautiful one
October in Saxony means autumn color beginning to appear in the castle gardens, crisp air and a quieter, more contemplative version of the region's beauty. Outdoor ceremonies are still entirely feasible in early October, the temperature drops but rarely becomes uncomfortable. The photography, particularly at venues with established gardens like Barockgarten Großsedlitz or Villa Sorgenfrei, takes on an atmosphere that is genuinely unlike any other season.
By late October the outdoor season closes and the character of a German castle wedding shifts from open-air grandeur to something more intimate which brings us to the other half of the year.
The other season: November through April and why it exists

Winter castle weddings in Germany: a genuine option
This is worth its own section, because the assumption that winter weddings are a compromise is wrong at least in Germany.
A castle wedding in November, December or January in Germany offers something categorically different from a summer celebration. The candlelit ballrooms of Schloss Albrechtsberg, the fireplace rooms of Schloss Eckberg, the baroque interiors of the Taschenbergpalais Kempinski lit with warm amber light, these spaces were designed for exactly this kind of intimate, atmospheric celebration.
Dresden at Christmas is one of the most beautiful experiences in Europe. The Striezelmarkt, one of the continent's oldest Christmas markets fills the historic center with light, music and the scent of mulled wine, directly below the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger. Couples who have celebrated here in winter consistently say that the experience surprised them, that it was more romantic, more personal and more memorable than they had imagined a winter wedding could be.
The practical advantages are real too: venue availability is higher, premiums are lower, and the intimacy of a winter celebration creates a natural emotional focus that large summer events sometimes dilute.
The decision framework
Rather than telling you which month is objectively best, Anikó's approach honed across more than 300 weddings since 2008 is to ask four questions:
What do you want the ceremony itself to feel like? Open-air in a baroque garden, with the sun still high at 7pm: June or September. Candlelit and intimate in a grand historic hall: November through February.
How important is outdoor photography? If sunset portraits in a vineyard or on a castle terrace are central to your vision: May, June or September. If you are more focused on interior architecture and intimate moments: any month works beautifully.
What experience do you want for your guests? A summer weekend that combines the wedding with a city exploration, river cruise and vineyard visit: May through September. A more concentrated, intimate weekend where the wedding is the entire focus: the shoulder season offers precisely that.
How much flexibility do you have on the date? If you have a specific month in mind: start planning immediately, because the best venues go first. If you are genuinely flexible: the shoulder season May, early October, or even November offers better availability and often stronger value.
A note on lead times
Whatever month you choose, the planning timeline matters.
June, July and September are the most competitive months. The best castle venues in Saxony Schloss Albrechtsberg, Villa Sorgenfrei, Schloss Wackerbarth, Stallhof Dresden book out 12–18 months in advance for peak season Saturdays. If you are reading this in the first half of the year and hoping for a summer wedding the same year, the conversation is worth having but flexibility will be required.
May, early October and November through April offer considerably more availability. A 6–9 month lead time is often sufficient for these months, though the best venues still go to couples who start earlier.
